Attention to detail

Compare codes without skipping the details

Two codes can look almost identical at a glance. Give each position its own check, and make the question’s exact rule your guide.

Know what counts as a match

Some questions ask for an exact copy. Others ask for one changed character, a transposition or a particular substitution. Those are different tasks. Before comparing options, restate the rule in a few words and check whether case, spaces or punctuation matter.

Use the same scan for every option

For an exact-match task, compare one position at a time from left to right. Keep returning to the reference instead of comparing an option with the previous option.

  1. Check the length first. A missing or extra character rules out an exact match.
  2. Align each position with the reference. Watch for reordered letters as well as similar-looking characters such as O and 0.
  3. After finding a candidate, compare it once more with the original. Use the rule to confirm the answer instead of relying on familiarity.

Test your comparison method

This example asks for an exact match. The order matters just as much as the characters themselves.

Practice the check you tend to miss

Begin without a timer and say or write which position rules an option out. Once the checking process feels consistent, try a short timed set. Record both errors and time so that a faster attempt does not hide missed details.

Review the type of mistake: a swapped pair, a changed symbol, or a rule you misread. In your next set, pay particular attention to that step. During an actual test, use only the aids and navigation options its instructions allow.
